WHOOP alternative

Lamplit as a WHOOP alternative

Short answer: yes — provided you already wear something that measures you. WHOOP sells three things bundled into one subscription: a sensor, a set of daily scores, and coaching. If there is already a watch or a ring on your wrist, you own the sensor. Lamplit is the other two, reading the data your device is already collecting, for $5.99 a month instead of $199–$359 a year. On Android that means essentially any watch you already wear: every Wear OS model publishes to Health Connect, so a Galaxy Watch 8, a Pixel Watch 4, a OnePlus Watch 3 and a Xiaomi Watch 5 all work the same way.

Prices and data-type support on this page were last verified September 8, 2026. Vendors change these — if something here is out of date, we want to know.

The subscription never ends. WHOOP's hardware feels free because the membership isn't — $199, $239 or $359 a year, for as long as you want your own history to keep updating.

It's a second thing to wear. Most people evaluating WHOOP already own a watch. The band is another device, on the other wrist, with its own charger and its own charging window.

The scores can't be checked. Recovery, Strain and WHOOP Age are proprietary curves. When the number disagrees with how you feel, there is nothing to inspect and no formula to read.

It only knows your body. WHOOP has no idea you argued with your boss, ate at midnight, or have been fasting since Tuesday — and those are very often the reason the number moved.

The three scores that stand in for WHOOP's

Readiness — the recovery score

Readiness answers the question WHOOP's Recovery percentage answers: how much have you actually got today? It is a 0–100 weighted score over four inputs — heart-rate variability against your own rolling baseline, last night's sleep, your acute-to-chronic training load, and resting heart rate. It renormalises over the inputs it can genuinely see, so a device that publishes sleep and heart rate but not HRV still returns an honest score instead of a broken one. Below about a third of coverage it declines to guess and shows nothing at all.

Effort — the strain score

Effort is the day's training load on a 0–100 scale, built from heart-rate-zone minutes converted into moderate-equivalent minutes and scaled against the World Health Organization's 150-minutes-a-week guidance. Where WHOOP's Strain is a proprietary 0–21 curve, Effort is a published formula you can check: vigorous minutes count double, and a day with no readable zone data says so rather than inventing a number.

Lamplit Age — the biological-age estimate

Lamplit Age is the counterpart to WHOOP Age — an estimate of how your habits and measurements compare with the years on your passport, expressed as an offset in either direction, plus a pace-of-aging figure. It runs nine inputs over a rolling 28-day window: resting heart rate, VO₂ max, sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep consistency, steps, heart-rate-zone minutes, strength work and lean-mass index. Missing inputs are dropped rather than replaced by an average, which pulls a sparse profile toward your real age instead of flattering it. Every coefficient and the study behind it are published at lamplit.ai/methodology.

Best for

  • You already own an Apple Watch, a Wear OS watch (Samsung Galaxy Watch, Pixel Watch, OnePlus Watch 3, Xiaomi Watch 5), a Garmin, an Oura Ring or a Fitbit
  • You want recovery and strain scores without a second subscription band on your other wrist
  • You want the reason behind the number — sleep, food, mood, cycle and training in one place
  • You'd rather read the formula than trust a curve nobody outside the company has seen

The honest caveats

Lamplit ships no hardware, and it isn't going to. It reads what your device's own app already computed, so it cannot sample your heart rate around the clock and it cannot notice a workout that nothing recorded. A screenless sensor that runs for days and never comes off is the thing WHOOP genuinely sells, and no software layer replaces it.

Wearable sync is a Pro feature at $5.99 a month. Readiness, Effort, Lamplit Age and the Longevity Score are free on every plan — but on the free plan they run on what you log by hand, not on what your watch measured.

Your device's numbers are your device's numbers. Lamplit does not re-derive heart-rate variability from a raw signal; if your wearable's sleep staging runs optimistic, Lamplit inherits that. Changing devices mid-year will show up as a step change in your baselines, and the app will not pretend otherwise.

None of these scores is a medical device, a diagnosis or a prediction about your lifespan. Neither is WHOOP's. The difference is that Lamplit's methodology is published in full, so you can see exactly which association each number rests on.

What it actually costs

WHOOP's entry membership is $199 a year and the top tier is $359. Lamplit Pro — which is what unlocks wearable sync — is $5.99 a month, or $71.88 a year, and the hardware is whatever is already on your wrist. If you own nothing at all, a Fitbit Air is $99.99 once, which still lands under a single year of WHOOP.

The argument is the same for every one of these — only the data that crosses the bridge changes.
