Pixel Watch as a WHOOP alternative

The Pixel Watch measures nearly everything WHOOP does — continuous heart rate, heart-rate variability, resting heart rate and staged sleep — and, since the Fitbit app became Google Health in May 2026, it publishes that data outward through Health Connect. Which means the sensor question is settled and only the interpretation is left. That is the part Lamplit does, for $5.99 a month rather than $199–$359 a year.

Is Pixel Watch a good WHOOP alternative?

Yes, and on Android this is the strongest pairing available. Google Health writes heart rate, heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep, steps and exercise into Health Connect, which covers three of Readiness's four inputs directly and leaves the fourth — training load — to be derived from your workout history. Coverage is effectively as good as an Apple Watch, minus VO₂ max.

The real difference is what happens after the measurement. Google Health Premium's coaching is a $9.99-a-month upsell, and like WHOOP's it is a closed system: you get a conclusion, not a formula. Lamplit's Readiness shows its components and their weights, Effort is scaled against a published WHO guideline rather than a proprietary curve, and Lamplit Age lists every coefficient and the study behind it. Whether that matters is a personal question, but it is the axis these pages are competing on.

One platform limitation dominates everything else here, and it is worth checking before you plan around it: on iPhone, Google Health imports from Apple Health but does not write back to it. So a Pixel Watch paired with an iPhone does not reach Lamplit at all. This pairing is an Android one.

The three scores that stand in for WHOOP's

Readiness — the recovery score

Readiness answers the question WHOOP's Recovery percentage answers: how much have you actually got today? It is a 0–100 weighted score over four inputs — heart-rate variability against your own rolling baseline, last night's sleep, your acute-to-chronic training load, and resting heart rate. It renormalises over the inputs it can genuinely see, so a device that publishes sleep and heart rate but not HRV still returns an honest score instead of a broken one. Below about a third of coverage it declines to guess and shows nothing at all.

Effort — the strain score

Effort is the day's training load on a 0–100 scale, built from heart-rate-zone minutes converted into moderate-equivalent minutes and scaled against the World Health Organization's 150-minutes-a-week guidance. Where WHOOP's Strain is a proprietary 0–21 curve, Effort is a published formula you can check: vigorous minutes count double, and a day with no readable zone data says so rather than inventing a number.

Lamplit Age — the biological-age estimate

Lamplit Age is the counterpart to WHOOP Age — an estimate of how your habits and measurements compare with the years on your passport, expressed as an offset in either direction, plus a pace-of-aging figure. It runs nine inputs over a rolling 28-day window: resting heart rate, VO₂ max, sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep consistency, steps, heart-rate-zone minutes, strength work and lean-mass index. Missing inputs are dropped rather than replaced by an average, which pulls a sparse profile toward your real age instead of flattering it. The honest caveats

Battery is the honest weak point: a Pixel Watch generally needs charging daily, so wearing it every night takes deliberate habit-building in a way WHOOP's multi-day band does not. And on iPhone this does not work at all — Google Health reads Apple Health but does not write to it, so there is no route from the watch to Lamplit. VO₂ max also stays inside Google Health as a Cardio Fitness Score rather than crossing the bridge, which costs Lamplit Age one of its stronger inputs.

Lamplit ships no hardware, and it isn't going to. It reads what your device's own app already computed, so it cannot sample your heart rate around the clock and it cannot notice a workout that nothing recorded. A screenless sensor that runs for days and never comes off is the thing WHOOP genuinely sells, and no software layer replaces it.

Wearable sync is a Pro feature at $5.99 a month. Readiness, Effort, Lamplit Age and the Longevity Score are free on every plan — but on the free plan they run on what you log by hand, not on what your watch measured.

Your device's numbers are your device's numbers. Lamplit does not re-derive heart-rate variability from a raw signal; if your wearable's sleep staging runs optimistic, Lamplit inherits that. Changing devices mid-year will show up as a step change in your baselines, and the app will not pretend otherwise.

None of these scores is a medical device, a diagnosis or a prediction about your lifespan. Neither is WHOOP's. The difference is that Lamplit's methodology is published in full, so you can see exactly which association each number rests on.

What it actually costs

Health Connect is free and Google Health Premium is not required for any of this — the tracking data crosses without it. So it is Lamplit Pro at $5.99 a month, on a watch you already own, against WHOOP at $199–$359 a year.

  1. Install Health Connect if your Android version doesn't already include it, and open the Google Health app.
  2. In Google Health, allow it to write to Health Connect — enable heart rate, heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep, steps and exercise.
  3. Grant Lamplit read access in Health Connect, then wear the watch overnight for a week to build baselines.
