If a Samsung Galaxy Watch, a Pixel Watch, a OnePlus Watch 3 or a Xiaomi Watch 5 is already on your wrist, you own the expensive half of a WHOOP membership. Those watches measure continuous heart rate, sleep and resting heart rate all night and publish them to Health Connect. Is Wear OS a good WHOOP alternative?
Yes — and on Android this is the broadest answer there is, because it does not depend on you owning one particular brand. Every Wear OS watch carries an optical heart-rate sensor, tracks sleep, and hands that data to Health Connect through its maker's app. WHOOP's band measures the same things. The difference is that WHOOP sells you the sensor and the scores as one permanent subscription, and the sensor is the part you already bought.
What differs between brands is which metrics make it through Health Connect. Samsung Health and Google Health both publish sleep and resting heart rate; heart-rate variability is simultaneously the input Readiness weighs most heavily and the one least consistently exported, so the table above marks it Varies rather than promising a number your watch may never send. Readiness renormalises over whatever actually arrives, so a watch that sends sleep and resting heart rate but no HRV still returns a real score built on three of its four inputs.

The table describes the Health Connect path, which is the one that varies by manufacturer — check your watch app's Health Connect permission screen for the definitive answer on your device. Galaxy Watch is the only Wear OS line with a body-composition sensor, which is why that row says Varies too, and neither Samsung Health nor Google Health exports its fitness-level estimate as a Health Connect type, so VO₂ max does not cross on any of them.
The three scores that stand in for WHOOP's
Readiness — the recovery score
Readiness answers the question WHOOP's Recovery percentage answers: how much have you actually got today? It is a 0–100 weighted score over four inputs — heart-rate variability against your own rolling baseline, last night's sleep, your acute-to-chronic training load, and resting heart rate. It renormalises over the inputs it can genuinely see, so a device that publishes sleep and heart rate but not HRV still returns an honest score instead of a broken one. Below about a third of coverage it declines to guess and shows nothing at all.
Effort — the strain score
Effort is the day's training load on a 0–100 scale, built from heart-rate-zone minutes converted into moderate-equivalent minutes and scaled against the World Health Organization's 150-minutes-a-week guidance. Where WHOOP's Strain is a proprietary 0–21 curve, Effort is a published formula you can check: vigorous minutes count double, and a day with no readable zone data says so rather than inventing a number.
Lamplit Age — the biological-age estimate
Lamplit Age is the counterpart to WHOOP Age — an estimate of how your habits and measurements compare with the years on your passport, expressed as an offset in either direction, plus a pace-of-aging figure. It runs nine inputs over a rolling 28-day window: resting heart rate, VO₂ max, sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep consistency, steps, heart-rate-zone minutes, strength work and lean-mass index. Missing inputs are dropped rather than replaced by an average, which pulls a sparse profile toward your real age instead of flattering it. The honest caveats
Which metrics cross is your manufacturer's decision, not yours: if your watch app does not export HRV to Health Connect, no setting in Lamplit will conjure it, and Readiness runs on the rest. Most Wear OS watches also want charging daily, so overnight wear is a habit you have to build in a way WHOOP's multi-day band does not ask for — the OnePlus Watch 3 and Xiaomi Watch 5 are the exceptions at four to five days. And Samsung Health's sync needs a Samsung account and will not run on a non-Samsung phone. Separately, Lamplit's own watch app needs Wear OS 3.0 or newer; on an older watch, or on a non-Wear-OS Android watch from Amazfit or Huawei, you still get the scores through Health Connect, just not the on-watch experience.
Lamplit ships no hardware, and it isn't going to. It reads what your device's own app already computed, so it cannot sample your heart rate around the clock and it cannot notice a workout that nothing recorded. A screenless sensor that runs for days and never comes off is the thing WHOOP genuinely sells, and no software layer replaces it.
Wearable sync is a Pro feature at $5.99 a month. Readiness, Effort, Lamplit Age and the Longevity Score are free on every plan — but on the free plan they run on what you log by hand, not on what your watch measured.
Your device's numbers are your device's numbers. Lamplit does not re-derive heart-rate variability from a raw signal; if your wearable's sleep staging runs optimistic, Lamplit inherits that. Changing devices mid-year will show up as a step change in your baselines, and the app will not pretend otherwise.
None of these scores is a medical device, a diagnosis or a prediction about your lifespan. Neither is WHOOP's. The difference is that Lamplit's methodology is published in full, so you can see exactly which association each number rests on.
What it actually costs
Nothing extra for the watch or its app: Samsung Health, Google Health and Health Connect are all free, and none of them gates the export Lamplit reads. So it is Lamplit Pro at $5.99 a month, on a watch you already own, against WHOOP at $199–$359 a year.
