Is Apple Watch a good WHOOP alternative?
Yes, and this is the strongest pairing on the page. The gap between an Apple Watch and a WHOOP band was never really the sensor — Apple's optical heart sensor and its HRV pipeline are mature, validated and free of any subscription. The gap was that Apple Health hands you a wall of charts and no verdict. It will tell you your overnight HRV was 42 ms; it will not tell you that this is low for you, that you trained hard twice in three days, and that today is a day to go easy.
That verdict is the entire product WHOOP sells, and it is what Lamplit adds. This is the most complete bridge in this set. Apple Watch is the only source here that publishes all three of heart-rate variability, resting heart rate and VO₂ max natively, so Readiness runs at full coverage and Lamplit Age gets its two heaviest-weighted inputs. Body composition is the one gap — the watch measures neither weight nor body fat, so those arrive only if a connected scale writes them to Apple Health.
The three scores that stand in for WHOOP's
Readiness — the recovery score
Readiness answers the question WHOOP's Recovery percentage answers: how much have you actually got today? It is a 0–100 weighted score over four inputs — heart-rate variability against your own rolling baseline, last night's sleep, your acute-to-chronic training load, and resting heart rate. It renormalises over the inputs it can genuinely see, so a device that publishes sleep and heart rate but not HRV still returns an honest score instead of a broken one. Below about a third of coverage it declines to guess and shows nothing at all.
Effort — the strain score
Effort is the day's training load on a 0–100 scale, built from heart-rate-zone minutes converted into moderate-equivalent minutes and scaled against the World Health Organization's 150-minutes-a-week guidance. Where WHOOP's Strain is a proprietary 0–21 curve, Effort is a published formula you can check: vigorous minutes count double, and a day with no readable zone data says so rather than inventing a number.
Lamplit Age — the biological-age estimate
Lamplit Age is the counterpart to WHOOP Age — an estimate of how your habits and measurements compare with the years on your passport, expressed as an offset in either direction, plus a pace-of-aging figure. The honest caveats
The watch has to be on your wrist overnight, which means finding another time to charge it — most people settle on the shower or the commute. WHOOP's four-to-five-day battery genuinely wins here, and if you know you will not wear a watch to bed, none of this works. You will also need sleep tracking switched on in the Health app or via Sleep Focus; without it there is no sleep data to read, and sleep carries the largest single weight in Readiness.
Lamplit ships no hardware, and it isn't going to. It reads what your device's own app already computed, so it cannot sample your heart rate around the clock and it cannot notice a workout that nothing recorded. A screenless sensor that runs for days and never comes off is the thing WHOOP genuinely sells, and no software layer replaces it.
Wearable sync is a Pro feature at $5.99 a month. Readiness, Effort, Lamplit Age and the Longevity Score are free on every plan — but on the free plan they run on what you log by hand, not on what your watch measured.
Your device's numbers are your device's numbers. Lamplit does not re-derive heart-rate variability from a raw signal; if your wearable's sleep staging runs optimistic, Lamplit inherits that. Changing devices mid-year will show up as a step change in your baselines, and the app will not pretend otherwise.
