The Oura Ring and the WHOOP band are the two devices built for people who dislike wearing a watch to bed. Oura won that argument on comfort: a ring you forget you have on, with a week of battery. What you get back is a very good sleep report and a Readiness score of Oura's own. Is Oura Ring a good WHOOP alternative?

Yes for sleep and recovery, with one specific limitation you should know before you commit. Oura publishes sleep with stages and timing, heart rate, workouts, steps and active energy to both Apple Health and Health Connect, and sleep is the largest single weight in Lamplit's Readiness — so the most important input arrives intact and detailed.

Heart-rate variability does not cross, and the reason is structural rather than an oversight. Oura computes HRV as rMSSD; Apple Health's HRV type is defined as SDNN. They are different calculations over the same intervals, and Oura declines to write one into a field that means the other — which is the honest choice, even though it costs you a data type. In practice Readiness runs on sleep, heart rate and training load, and the ring's sleep data is detailed enough that this remains a strong score.

Two things gate this integration. It needs an active Oura membership on Gen3 and Ring 4 — the sync is not part of the hardware purchase. And Oura publishes weight and height it was given rather than measured, so those fields are only as good as what you typed into the Oura app.

The three scores that stand in for WHOOP's

Readiness — the recovery score

Readiness answers the question WHOOP's Recovery percentage answers: how much have you actually got today? It is a 0–100 weighted score over four inputs — heart-rate variability against your own rolling baseline, last night's sleep, your acute-to-chronic training load, and resting heart rate. It renormalises over the inputs it can genuinely see, so a device that publishes sleep and heart rate but not HRV still returns an honest score instead of a broken one. Below about a third of coverage it declines to guess and shows nothing at all.

Effort — the strain score

Effort is the day's training load on a 0–100 scale, built from heart-rate-zone minutes converted into moderate-equivalent minutes and scaled against the World Health Organization's 150-minutes-a-week guidance. Where WHOOP's Strain is a proprietary 0–21 curve, Effort is a published formula you can check: vigorous minutes count double, and a day with no readable zone data says so rather than inventing a number.

Lamplit Age — the biological-age estimate

Lamplit Age is the counterpart to WHOOP Age — an estimate of how your habits and measurements compare with the years on your passport, expressed as an offset in either direction, plus a pace-of-aging figure. It runs nine inputs over a rolling 28-day window: resting heart rate, VO₂ max, sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep consistency, steps, heart-rate-zone minutes, strength work and lean-mass index. Missing inputs are dropped rather than replaced by an average, which pulls a sparse profile toward your real age instead of flattering it. The honest caveats

Two costs are easy to miss. The Apple Health and Health Connect integrations require an active Oura membership at $5.99 a month on current rings, so "Oura plus Lamplit" is genuinely two subscriptions — still less than WHOOP's top tier, but not one. And with HRV absent, Readiness is running on three of its four inputs; it will say so rather than hide it, but it is a real reduction in confidence against an Apple Watch or Pixel Watch pairing.

Lamplit ships no hardware, and it isn't going to. It reads what your device's own app already computed, so it cannot sample your heart rate around the clock and it cannot notice a workout that nothing recorded. A screenless sensor that runs for days and never comes off is the thing WHOOP genuinely sells, and no software layer replaces it.

Wearable sync is a Pro feature at $5.99 a month. Readiness, Effort, Lamplit Age and the Longevity Score are free on every plan — but on the free plan they run on what you log by hand, not on what your watch measured.

Your device's numbers are your device's numbers. Lamplit does not re-derive heart-rate variability from a raw signal; if your wearable's sleep staging runs optimistic, Lamplit inherits that. Changing devices mid-year will show up as a step change in your baselines, and the app will not pretend otherwise.

None of these scores is a medical device, a diagnosis or a prediction about your lifespan. Neither is WHOOP's. The difference is that Lamplit's methodology is published in full, so you can see exactly which association each number rests on.

What it actually costs

Oura is $349 or more for the ring, plus $5.99 a month for the membership that enables the sync. Add Lamplit Pro at $5.99 and you are at $11.98 a month — against WHOOP at $199–$359 a year. If you already own the ring and pay the membership, the marginal cost of everything on this page is $5.99.

Getting set up

  1. Confirm your Oura membership is active — the integration needs it on Gen3 and Ring 4.
  2. In the Oura app, open Settings → Data Sharing → Apple Health or Health Connect and enable sleep, heart rate, workouts, steps and active energy.
  3. Grant Lamplit read access to the same store. Sleep-driven Readiness appears within a few nights; the training-load component needs a week.
