A separate analysis looked at blood pressure and found that frequent users were markedly less likely to develop hypertension over the years of follow-up. Why Heat Might Work: Passive Cardio

Step into a traditional Finnish sauna — dry air at 80–100°C (176–212°F) — and your body responds much as it does when a brisk walk turns into a jog. Heart rate climbs to roughly 100–150 beats per minute. Blood vessels in the skin dilate and cardiac output rises as the body works to shed heat, while sweat losses mount. There is a cellular layer as well. Heat triggers the production of heat-shock proteins — molecular chaperones that help refold damaged proteins and are being studied for roles in cellular maintenance and stress resistance. Heat is a genuine physiological stressor: that is precisely why it seems to work, and also why it deserves the same respect you would give a workout. Confounding can never be fully excluded in observational research — in Finland, frequent sauna access can travel with income, social connection and leisure time, and statistical adjustment reduces that problem without eliminating it. There are no randomized controlled trials with hard outcomes like heart attacks or deaths, and there may never be: you cannot blind a sauna or run one for twenty years.
