- Time-restricted eating (TRE).Eating within a daily window — commonly 8 to 10 hours — and fasting the rest, for example eating between 10am and 6pm. This is the most practical and sustainable form for most people.
- 5:2 or modified fasting. Eating normally most days and sharply restricting calories on two non-consecutive days a week.
- Alternate-day fasting. Alternating normal days with fasting or very-low-calorie days. Effective in studies but harder to maintain.
What the Science Actually Shows
The most cited scientific case for fasting comes from a review in the New England Journal of Medicine, which argued that intermittent fasting triggers a “metabolic switch” — once glycogen stores are depleted after many hours without food, the body shifts toward burning fat and producing ketones, a state associated with improved stress resistance and metabolic health in both animal and human studies.

Some of the strongest human evidence is for metabolic markers rather than the scale. In a trial of people with metabolic syndrome, a 10-hour eating window reduced body weight, blood pressure, and atherogenic lipids. And notably, a study of early time-restricted eating improved insulin sensitivity and blood pressure even without any weight loss— suggesting real benefits from meal timing itself, likely by aligning eating with the body’s circadian rhythm.

An Honest Reality Check
Fasting is not magic, and it is worth being clear about that. For weight loss specifically, much of the benefit comes down to eating fewer calories overall — a shorter window simply makes that easier for many people. When researchers controlled for calories, the advantage narrowed: a randomised trial found that a 16:8 schedule produced only modest weight loss, not significantly better than eating across the day.

The honest summary: time-restricted eating is a genuinely useful tool— it can simplify eating, curb late-night snacking, and improve some metabolic markers — but it is not inherently superior to any other approach that leaves you eating well and in energy balance. It works best when the food inside the window is good and the window suits your life.
How to Try Time-Restricted Eating Sensibly
- Start gently and widen the fast over time.Begin with a 12-hour overnight fast — which most people already nearly do — then gradually narrow to a 10- or 8-hour eating window if it suits you.
- Favour an earlier window. The metabolic evidence is strongest for eating earlier in the day and finishing well before bed, which aligns food with your circadian rhythm and tends to protect sleep.
- Keep the food quality high. A shorter window is not a licence to eat poorly. Fill the window with the whole-food, protein- and fibre-rich meals that benefit you regardless of timing.

Important Caveats
Intermittent fasting is not for everyone. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for anyone with a history of disordered eating, or for children and teenagers.
