Outdoors Is in a Different League

More Than Sleep: Daylight and Mood

The case for morning light would be strong if it only moved melatonin. But the same pathway reaches brain regions involved in mood and alertness, and the population data point the same way. In an analysis of more than 400,000 UK Biobank participants, people who reported more time in outdoor light during the day had better odds on a whole cluster of outcomes: better mood, lower likelihood of depressive symptoms, easier waking and fewer insomnia complaints. These are associations, not proof of causation — people who spend time outdoors differ in many ways — but the pattern held after adjusting for obvious confounders, and it fits the mechanism precisely.

Be honest about what the evidence is.
